If you’re looking for excellent seafood in a relaxed space, Michelin-recommended Kødbyens fiskebar should be at the top of your list.
Good fish n chips can be hard to find anywhere outside of Australia or the UK. The classic budget staple and stomach liner for nights out is usually only on menus in Irish bars. Luckily we were spending the evening with subscribers to the Michelin guide and they had just the place – Kødbyens fiskebar.
As a major port, Copenhagen is blessed with no shortage of trawlers and seafood. Oysters, mussels, octopus, and oily fish like salmon are in liberal supply. Perusing the menu via Yelp, we were convinced. Walking from Nyhaven, it was a good thirty-minute stroll through a semi-industrial wasteland, down narrow alleys to an area that has undergone significant urban renewal.
Old storehouses are now home to design agencies, audio suppliers, and music agents. Walking between row after row of these new spaces, the area opens onto a massive car park bordered by some of Copenhagen’s best up-and-coming restaurants. We have inadvertently found ourselves in the meatpacking district – one of the most happening spots in this Scandinavian capital.
Kødbyens fiskebar offers indoor and outdoor dining. We opt to enjoy the early evening sun and partake in generous serves of fresh rock oysters and the much-anticipated fish and chips, served in a newsprint cone, just like the good old days. The fare does not disappoint. It’s fresh, flaky and the chips have just the right balance of crunch on the outside and creaminess on the inside.
Kødbyens fiskebar is not the easiest place to get to, but it provided us with an unexpected but memorable dining experience.
