The Bond 1835 is a luxury bed & breakfast (B&B) overlooking Lake Skaneateles
If you want to find out where to stay in the Finger Lakes district of New York, The Bond 1835 is everything you’ve been looking for. The Bond 1835 offers luxe, five-star accommodation in a historic farmhouse looking over Lake Skaneateles, in Central New York. We had the pleasure of staying a few nights in this classic upstate bed and breakfast with gorgeous lake views and rustic, yet modern guest rooms.
Base Yourself in The Finger Lakes
Although they sit only a couple of hours by car from the Canadian border and four hours from New York City, The Finger Lakes are actually recognized as Central New York. They are a collection of picturesque glacier-formed lakes in a historic region close to the Erie Canal. This is an area of classic architecture, million-dollar mansions, Ivy League universities, and natural beauty. The key destinations most people head for are Ithaca on Cayuga Lake (which is closest to Watkins Glen waterfalls) or Skaneateles on Lake Skaneateles. When looking at where to stay in the Finger Lakes, we settled on the latter for its proximity to Syracuse and its range of experiences to enjoy.
The Skinny on Lake Skaneateles
Skaneateles is Iroquois for “Long lake” but how to pronounce Skaneateles is nothing like what it looks like written down. You pronounce it Skinny Atlas. The township offers plenty for visitors, which we cover in a different article, but just to whet your appetite, it’s home to fashion boutiques, 200-year-old restaurants, craft breweries, distilleries, and famed bakeries. The Bond 1835
The Bond 1835 is a farmhouse dating back to 1835. It was originally part of a larger parcel of land, and the neighboring farmstead, hidden beyond a thick buffer of woodland, contains the original barn and silo which is part of a still-operational farm. The Bond 1835 Bnb sits on the side of a pocket of lush green grass and manicured gardens. A white loveseat swing hangs from an ancient tree, making for a perfect outlook for the blue waters of Lake Skaneateles. An old enamel HOTEL sign greets on the porch, along with two cute designer Safavieh timber rocking chairs.
Entering the farmhouse, you’re greeted by an impeccably styled living room, with its stoic stone fireplace, leather sofa, and bar. Every element is thoughtfully styled, with a leaning towards the hip, rather than the grandparents’ house. Your hosts, Mark and Corey, are incredibly sweet. They offer exceptional hospitality and only appear at the rare moments you may need them, like greeting you with hot coffee and a breakfast menu.
The Rooms
There are five rooms in total and we’re lucky to be offered the pride of the house, the Lakeview king room. We’re greeted by a large, airy room looking out on the garden and lake (as promised). The king bed is spacious and appointed with Boll & Branch manchester and with a cute embroidered cushion that highlights key things to see and do in the region – nice touch! There’s a walk-in wardrobe (with bathrobes), flat screen TV, Keurig machine, and mini-refrigerator. The bathroom is shower only, but it’s all impeccably clean and modern.
What is really thoughtful are the minibar options. Being in Upstate New York and approximately ten minutes by car from the center of town, food delivery options are limited. Corey and Mark have a well-devised minibar with chips, chocolates, health bars, beers, seltzers, and regional wines. It’s a nice touch and sure to help you when you get a hankering on your Lake Skaneateles stay.
Of all the luxuries offered, it’s the comfort of the king-size bed that stands out the most. We sleep like babies, on superior gel memory foam mattresses and natural sheets. Roll down the shades and it’s dark as night, roll them back up and you’re greeted by those glorious Lake Skaneateles views.
The Breakfast
Served between 8:30 and 10:30 each day, Corey and her daughter serve up a delicious, fresh breakfast, with Mark providing the entertaining banter while you wait. The options include fresh-baked pastries, scrambles, avocado toast, yogurt, and other locally-sourced farm-to-table treats. Pour a strong coffee and take a seat inside, out in the shade, in the herb garden, or in the pergola, looking out to the lake.
The Extras
In addition to the amazing service, chilled atmosphere, and stylish guest rooms, Corey and Mark may offer you extra options, depending on the time of travel. They have a private home with lake access close by and depending on availability, you may be able to pay to hire their kayak, canoe, or paddleboards to hit the lake. The Bond 1835 is also gaining a name as a destination to host intimate weddings or to prepare for your special day. The outdoor space is impeccable and the bar can be opened for groups. Finally, the bed and breakfast is dog-friendly (upon request).

The Bond 1835 is where to stay in the Finger Lakes. It’s a peaceful retreat that is close to the millionaire enclave of Lake Skaneateles, but far enough to avoid the crowds.

We took the Amtrak from New York City’s Penn Station to Syracuse and then booked an Uber, but it’s much easier with your own car access.
