Amazon’s Marvelous Mrs Maisel exhibit captures New York in its golden era.

Have you ever thought you were born in the wrong era? Do you feel a stronger connection to tradition, stylish fashion and mid-century modern furnishings? Have you longed for a glimpse into Midge Maisel’s privileged life? From now through September 6 you can stop by the Paley Center for Media in the heart of Manhattan’s thriving midtown and step back into 1950s New York—a city of elegance, grit, and underground comedy.

Step back in time to 1959

Inside the exhibit you will find a selection of treasures from the show including sets, costumes, media and other artifacts from the era. Spread over two floors, the exhibit is well thought out, allowing patrons to surround themselves in the moment, interact with sets, jump in to Midge’s shoes at the switch board, and chat up a storm behind the makeup counter. Can I sell you some remover with that nail polish?

The exhibit takes you on a journey through late 50s pop culture, following the comedian’s family escapades from NYC to a Parisian apartment, to a Borscht Belt vacation villa, just like Kellermans from Dirty Dancing. You can pose or present to an authentic 1950s studio camera, beamed to an array of old tube screens or listen in to phone calls on the switchboard.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel exhibit is a window into better times

Arguably, no other era has had such a prolific impact on fashion and there’s plenty of that here. The doors have been thrown open to the Marvelous Mrs Maisel wardrobe department with a generous selection of cute ensembles on display. Who can forget the gorgeous pink outfit with matching pink and orange plaid felt jacket? We can’t—and it’s on display, along with stills from the show to set the scene. Also on display is Midge’s iconic black bubble dress. Classic and understated, we wouldn’t be surprised if this dress is replicated at holiday parties across the city in 2019, just like it was in 1959.

The downstairs theater screens back-to-back episodes daily, so you can catch up on the gossip before stopping for dinner at the Stage Diner on your way home.
