Gotham City has to have a superhero store where you can look the part and at the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., you can dress to impress.
Right now, New York could do with more caped crusaders and at this superhero store in the popular Park Slope neighborhood, it’s the breeding ground for another generation of comic book heroes. That’s because it’s so much more than just a superhero shop – it’s a front for a groundbreaking literacy program.
If you were a superhero, what would be your secret power? For Bernie, it’d be the ability to spill coffee out of a sealed cup, and for Jess, it would be sensing a bodega cat from 20 yards away. We may not save anyone, but luckily we’re not called upon too often.
For those with mad superhero skills, you’re going to need to look the part. That’s where the Brooklyn Super Hero Supply Co. comes in. Looking more like a villain’s lair, than a superhero’s (perhaps it could compare with the Bat Cave from the original 1960s episodes, this quirky Park Slope outfitter has a few secrets of its own.
Step beyond the bright satin assortment of capes and rows of metal shelving and you may get a glimpse of the secret command center secreted behind a fake shelf. It swings open to reveal a library and creative writing studio to encourage kids’ development outside the traditional school environment.
Volunteers offer tutoring, support, and even publishing for budding writers. It’s a popular venue for kids’ parties, creating a cool experience to promote better literacy. Other highlights include a de-villainizer and a mind-reading machine.
The Brooklyn Super Hero Supply Co is a brilliant idea, so make sure you buy a shirt, novelty ray gun or that hot pink satin cape – you know it will look killer!
As New York residents, Bernie and Jess have a range of incredible local places to try or to add to your New York travel itinerary ideas here.
