Heating & Utilities

Utilities

Hooking up utilities is really easy. Most apartments include heating as part of the rent, so that leaves you with gas, electricity and internet to consider. ConEd is the main gas and electricity supplier and you’ll need to pay an upfront deposit that is refunded after the first year. For Internet, Verizon Fios offers the best speeds and bang for your buck, but Time Warner is also competitive if you want to bundle it with pay TV. We avoided cable TV altogether as Netflix and Hulu cover most shows and there’s a great app called Sling on SmartTVs, which is for chord cutters. You can subscribe to cable channels, but it’s streamed via the Internet so you don’t get tied to two year contracts.

Heating

New York runs on steam. You’ll see it rising up from subway grates, manhole covers and you’ll hear it whispering out of the valves of your central heating if you’re in an older building. Most places have steam powered or gas heating that is included with your rent.
